CBS CEO George Cheeks previously told Deadline that Corden’s departure presented an opportunity to mix up the Late Night format. “We will enjoy a lot [Corden’s] final year, [but] I think we’re going to take some time to think about that part of the day and what kind of format might make sense there,” Cheeks said. “But again, we would have loved if he wanted to stay for 10 more years, but he really decided it was time to make a move. … We’ll spend some time figuring out what the correct replacement format is, and I don’t think we’ll just throw another host in there, I think it’s really looking at the format.”

“Look, it’s by no means easy to walk away from something that’s so, I mean, I’ll never work in a better environment than the one I work in now,” Corden explained in The Drew Barrymore program on January 3, 2023. “Nothing about leaving the program had to do with not enjoying it. I love it.” He continued: “But the truth is that it became a very easy decision because I always knew it was an adventure and I never, ever considered it to be the final destination”.

Corden announced that he was leaving the late show in April 2022 and that his final show would be in the spring of 2023. It was later revealed that his final episode would air on Thursday, April 27, 2023, and as part of the final episode, he would do one last Carpool Karaoke with, appropriately, Adele. “During their second Carpool together, and Corden’s last as host of the late show – Adele surprises her old friend at home in the morning, wakes him up, and offers to drive the late-night host to work,” according to a press release from the show, per CNN. “Once in the car, Adele turns Corden around and asks him about previous carpools, pivotal moments in their friendship (including the time she tried and failed to prank him), and even a song he wrote that was inspired by an emotional conversation they shared.”
“I’ll be a disaster on that last show. I will cry until my eyes,” he continued with Barrymore. “But I will know, deep down, that the best thing for me and the best thing for us as a family is to put down roots in London. … And it feels absolutely right in every way.”
Talking with Eastern Time in May 2022, she told Nischelle Turner that the time was right for her time on the show to end. “When I took the job, first of all, I didn’t think we’d be on the air, like six months later. Then, as soon as it looked like we’d be going for a while, I was very, very determined that the show would not stay longer than expected by any means and that we would always know when to go. That we would always know when to win because I think that’s really important.”
