Until now, Moscow has largely been a safe haven from attack in the war with normal life despite the chaos and misery that Vladimir Putin has unleashed on dozens of Ukrainian cities.

The head of Ukrainian military intelligence, Kyrylo Budanov, warned Russia that it would see a swift response to unprecedented drone and missile attacks on kyiv in recent days.

“All those who tried to intimidate us, dreaming that this would have some effect, will regret it very soon,” Budanov said. Our answer will not be long in coming. Soon the whole world will see everything.

However, there was no immediate confirmation that Ukraine was behind the assault on Moscow, in which drones flew over Rublyovka, home to many of Putin’s closest oligarchs and not far from his official residence in the Moscow region.

The drones exploded in the suburbs of New Moscow and Novaya Riga, near Moscow. A drone struck the upper floors of a residential building at 98 Profsoyuznaya Street, destroying part of the apartment building.
