Manchester United’s 4-1 win over Chelsea on Thursday ended Liverpool’s hopes of earning a place in Europe’s top club competition next season. Juergen Klopp’s team is fifth, four points behind the top four with one game to go.

Last season Liverpool finished just one point behind Premier League champions Manchester City but were unable to present a challenge in the current campaign due to injuries and a run of poor form.

“I am totally devastated,” Salah said on Twitter. “There is absolutely no excuse for this. We had everything we needed to get to the Champions League next year and we failed.

“We are Liverpool and qualifying for the competition is the minimum. Sorry, but it’s too early for an uplifting or optimistic post. We let you and ourselves down.”

Liverpool play Southampton in their last game of the season on Sunday.
