CHICAGO (WLS) — A man has been charged after a Chicago police officer was struck by a fleeing vehicle on DuSable Lake Shore Drive Friday night, CPD said.
Police said the driver, Tajze Mullins, 23, was charged with attempted murder, among other charges.
The chaotic scene closed both directions of the road between Balbo and 18th Street near the Museum Campus.
Police said it started when, around 8:12 p.m., officers noticed a vehicle matching the description of one that was wanted in connection with an aggravated assault on a police officer earlier this month. After the police stopped the vehicle, the driver backed up and struck the officer who was approaching on foot.
An officer fired his weapon, but no one was hurt, police said. That’s when police said the wanted vehicle sped south and stopped near 72nd and Vincennes.
The suspects got out and tried to flee there again, but were arrested.
Police said the officer struck by the vehicle was transported to a local hospital and is in good condition with a broken leg. No one else was injured.
Police recovered a weapon and the unit has since reopened.
The Civilian Office of Police Accountability said it is investigating an officer-involved shooting near 398 East Roosevelt Road, which is just outside the Field Museum.
Authorities did not immediately provide more information about the accident.
