Ivy League admission day was March 30 this year, a big day for students wondering if they got into one of the best schools in the country.
Some filmed their reactions for TikTok, including millions of people in the intense moment of finding out whether or not they’d been accepted to their dream college.
The hashtag #IvyDay2023 racked up more than 30 million views on TikTok, with students from across the United States. Insider has not seen independent evidence of the admissions or rejections that students said they earned.
One was Muntara Singh, whose family rallied around her computer to find out if she got into Princeton and Dartmouth, which she did. Singh screamed as her family jumped up and hugged her in the video, which was viewed 2.5 million times.
Another was Tinaye Ngorima, whose sister Tawana shared the video call on her TikTok where she searched for all her admission offers. she ended up being viewed 20 million times.
After a couple of rejections from Berkeley and Dartmouth, Ngorima was placed on the waiting list for Yale and Princeton. But the disappointment was short-lived, because the biggest news came when Ngorima verified his status for Harvard.
Before saying anything, Ngorima started yelling “Oh my God” and her parents and little sister suddenly jumped up and yelled in celebration.
“I got into Harvard!” Ngorima told his sister through the screen as his mom hugged him and his dad yelled and took photos.
Ngorima also got into Brown and UPenn, so he had a big decision on his hands. He told his sister in a follow-up video call that he still hadn’t made up his mind.
Zac Kirchhoff’s Ivy Day video started off slow like Ngorima’s, with a rejection from Yale. He took the news hard, but then kept checking UPenn and Columbia with his mother by his side.
Kirchhoff ended up being accepted by both UPenn and Columbia, with 15 million other strangers watching the moment he found out.
“Oh my God, Zachary, what the hell? You got into both!” Kirchhoff’s mom said as they celebrated. “Fuck Yale!”
Not all videos were filled with emotion. TikToker Anish, who applied to several Ivy Leagues, found that Yale, UC Berkeley and Columbia turned him down, and Cornell put him on a waiting list. in your video. However, in previous videos, Anish had already been accepted to UC Irvine, Georgia Tech, and Purdue, so he had plenty of other options.
People in Anish’s comments appreciated his painstaking filming of accepts and rejects.
“I want to thank you for posting this,” one person wrote. “Your vulnerability shines like a superpower and I know you will do great things.”
