DETROIT (AP) — Stellantis says it is offering buyouts to groups of white-collar and union employees in the United States, as well as hourly workers in Canada. The company says it needs to cut costs to remain competitive as the auto industry shifts from internal combustion vehicles to vehicles that run on electricity. Stellantis says it is looking to reduce its hourly workforce by around 3,500, but did not say how many salaried employees it is targeting. The company has some 56,000 workers in the US and some 33,000 of them could receive the offers. Of these, 31,000 are workers and 2,500 are salaried. Another 8,000 unionized workers in Canada will also receive offers, the company said. The offers follow Ford and General Motors, which cut their workforce last year through takeover bids.
