State softball recap: Cretin-Derham Hall claims third place in Class 3A


NORTH MANKATO — Brooke Nesdahl, Sophie Black, Catherine Gaertner and Kaiya Anderson had two hits as Cretin-Derham Hall topped Delano 4-0 to earn third place in the Class 3A state tournament.

Nesdahl threw a two-hit shutout for the Raiders (18-9), who posted their first state tournament win since 1991. Nesdahl and Black hit home runs in the victory.

Top-seeded Mankato East defeated third-seeded Chisago Lakes 11-0 in the championship game, a reprieve for the Cougars after going 10 innings with Cretin-Derham Hall in the semifinals Thursday night.

Kylinn Stangl threw 160 pitches in that game against the Raiders and returned Friday to throw a complete game for Mankato East, a perennial power of the past that was making its first state tournament appearance since 2012.

CLASS 2A

Six different Dilworth-Glyndon-Felton batters collected hits — led by two from Kaleigh Peterson — in the Rebels’ 3-1 state championship win over St. Charles.

The title is the first for the Rebels in their eighth state tournament appearance. All four runs of the game came in the first frame. Autumn Leach pitched three innings for the Rebels before giving way to Natalee Linman, who allowed just two hits over the final four innings.

Catcher Grace Buringa went 3-for-3 in the leadoff spot for St. Charles, the second seed, while Makadyn Gust added a pair of strokes from the two hole.

Le Sueur-Henderson passed St. Agnes 5-0 in the third place game. Chloe Brandt threw a three-hitter for Le Sueur-Henderson.

CLASS A

Ana Veldkamp went a perfect 5-for-5 at the plate, scoring twice and knocking in two runs to lead Edgerton/Southwest Minnesota Christian to a 10-5 victory over Badger/Greenbush-Middle River to win the Class A crown.

Edgerton/Southwest Minnesota Christian has won three titles since 2016, with each of those title game wins coming against Badger/Greenbush-Middle River.

Seven players recorded multi-hit games for Edgerton/Southwest Minnesota Christian, which collected 18 hits in the title game.

Moose Lake/Willow River defeated Upsala 6-0 in the third-place game.
