Rivers: INEC sets Sunday for suspension of Asari-Toru LGA elections

The Independent National Election Commission (INEC) in Rivers on Saturday said the Commission was ready to conduct the Asari-Toru Local Government Area and Degema Local Government Area ward 14 election on Sunday.

This was announced by INEC Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC), Dr. Johnson Alalibo, in a statement from Geraldine Ekelemu, INEC Public Relations Officer, in Port Harcourt.

Mr. Alalibo stated that the election could not be held in the LGAs due to voter resistance from deployed election officials and materials for the Governor and State Assembly elections.

He said that the electorate and other interested parties demanded to see the district collation officer before allowing the elections to begin in Asari-Toru LGA.

According to him, the voters of the 14th district in Degema LGA also demanded that the supervising Presiding Officer (SPO) must appear at the Center of the Registration Area with check sheets, which prevents the election from being held in the area.

The REC said that the Commission had decided to hold the election in the areas on Sunday, based on the premise and based on section 24 of the Electoral Act 2022.
