Chris Sutton has expressed surprise at Micah Richards’ suggestion that both Pedro Porro and Ivan Perisic are poor defenders.
The Spurs full-backs did not cloak themselves in glory in their team’s humiliating 6-1 loss to Newcastle United on Sunday.
When Micah Richards hinted that Tottenham Hotspur’s duo of Pedro Porro and Ivan Perisic aren’t the best defensively, Chris Sutton’s jaw dropped.
Chris Sutton surprised by Micah Richards’ assessment of Pedro Porro and Ivan Perisic
During Cristian Stellini’s last game in charge as the club’s interim manager, the team put in one of its worst performances in Premier League history.
In fact, several Spurs fans would happily concede that it was one of the worst defensive displays from a top team ever witnessed in the English top flight, if not the worst.
Since Micah Richards initially hinted that Pedro Porro and Ivan Perisic struggle defensively, Chris Sutton was surprised to hear that.
“I said the coach is in charge of making sure you can play to the best of your ability, so if you have full-backs, I wouldn’t play them full-back because their strong points are not defense,” Richards said. in BBC Radio 5 Live’s Monday night club.
“That’s ridiculous, Micah. [Richards]. To suggest that they can’t defend themselves at all. That is absolutely ridiculous,” Sutton responded.
“Chris, they are in Newcastle. They are flying. [Ivan] Perisic, what is he known for? The technical ability of him, his center, his whip.”
Richards countered by saying: “Yes, he works hard, he is a team player. I joint exactly the same. Coming down the line, getting into a cross.”
Sutton concluded: “If you’re up against Newcastle who are flying and are asked to defend wave after wave of attack, that’s up to the manager for putting you in that position and then it’s up to the player to at least try.”
While Chris Sutton and Micah Richards are unlikely to see eye to eye anytime soon, Tottenham supporters are likely to attest that both Pedro Porro and Ivan Perisic aren’t the best defenders.
