The Los Angeles Rams haven’t won much recently.
On Tuesday, however, their predicament at 3-9 allowed them to claim Baker Mayfield from the waiver wire.
With Matthew Stafford on IR, it looks like Mayfield might get another chance to show what he’s got with fellow NFC West running backs, who also happen to be the defending Super Bowl champions.
Mayfield requested his release from the Carolina Panthers this week after being relegated to third on the depth chart behind Sam Darnold and PJ Walker.
The Rams’ dismal season landed them at the bottom of the NFL overall standings, leaving them 24th when it comes to resignations.
Former No. 1 overall pick Baker Mayfield was claimed off waivers by the Los Angeles Rams today, according to league sources. The Rams now inherit the remaining $1.35 million on Mayfield’s contract. Mayfield was a former No. 1 overall for the Cleveland Browns and had an up-and-down tenure with the AFC North team.
The Rams currently have Bryce Perkins and John Wolford at active quarterbacks.
In case anyone was wondering, Mayfield has worn the No. 6 in the pros. The Rams currently have rokie DB Derion Kendrick with that jersey number.
The San Francisco 49ers, who lost Jimmy Garoppolo to a broken foot on Sunday, did not file a claim for Mayfield. They would have trailed far behind the Rams on the waiver list.
For what it’s worth, the 49ers didn’t file a waiver claim for QB Baker Mayfield, who ended up being claimed by the Rams, according to the source.
