A strong member of the Peoples’ Democratic Party (PDP) identified as Gani Gele was allegedly shot dead on Saturday by a member of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the state in Isedo 1, Oloponda district 2, unit 5, Ila-Orangun during the comparison of the results of the recently completed House of Assembly in the neighborhood.
However, the state police command said they have arrested a suspect in connection with the death and that investigations have been launched into it.
A senior police officer who claimed to have been at the scene of the incident told our anonymous reporter that the command will leave no stone unturned in unraveling the circumstances surrounding the dastardly act.
The police officer confirmed that the suspect is now in their custody and assured that others who might have had something to do with the murder would be rescued and brought to trial appropriately.
It was learned that the event occurred around 4:00 p.m. on the day that there was a strong disagreement between the members of the party who exchanged a war of words about the placement of ballots and the theft of ballot boxes in various polling stations in the location.
However, this is said to have escalated into a heated argument between them and led to the death of the PPD member after being violently attacked by the main opposition in the state.
Speaking about the development, NSCDC Public Relations Officer Kehinde Adeleke said the deceased was struck by a bullet fired by thugs after the argument that a vote that was not cast correctly should be counted for a political party.
According to her, one person has been detained in connection with the incident, which occurred during the sorting and counting of ballots in the town.
When contacted, the command’s state public relations officer, Ms. Yemisi Opalola, said that she would contact our reporter as she has not yet received full information on the case.
Meanwhile, the Ila Orangun All Progressive Local Government Congress (APC) has called on the Peoples’ Democratic Party (PDP) in the area not to be dragged into the controversy surrounding the shooting of a PDP member by another. APC local government chairman Mr. Joseph Adedokun in a statement explained that his members only protested the overvote recorded at one of the voting units in Ward 4 and that while the protest was underway, one of the PDP thugs drew their gun and aimed it at an APC member, but the bullet hit one of the PDP members.
“Clearly, we did not participate in the shooting of any PPD member. They shot themselves. They wanted to kill one of us, but divine providence saved our member.”
“Ask, our people were attacked in the Oke Ola area from Friday night until the early hours of this morning. They are known for violence. We call on security officers to conduct a thorough investigation and ensure that everyone associated with the incident is held accountable,” the APC president said.
