Take a page from the hobbit lifestyle and relax a bit, because the new Lord of the Rings movies aren’t coming any time soon. Warner Bros. Discovery CFO Gunnar Wiedenfels touched on the franchise while speaking on Morgan Stanley Investor Conference on Wednesday and noted that they are now meeting with creatives.
Variety reports that Wiedenfels avoided going into detail about The Lord of the Rings, though he did express enthusiasm for the future of the franchise. “David [Zaslav, president and CEO of Warner Bros. Discovery] made a promise, unquote, early on to reinvigorate some of that highly successful and iconic IP and we’re starting to make progress,” said Widenfels. “It’s exciting to see how people are coming in and out and how the creative community is taking advantage of this opportunity. to work with us. That’s going to pay off, over time.”
Last month, Warner Bros. and New Line signed an agreement to make new Lord of the Rings movies, which will not be remakes or retreads seen in the original Peter Jackson trilogy. Although keep in mind there is a lord of the rings anime movie called the war of the rohirrim aiming for a 2024 release. That project preceded this new deal.
An earlier report claimed Warner Bros. wants Lord of the Rings to become a “Star Wars-like franchise” but no scripts have been written yet. That seems to fit with what Wiedenfels said, as the studio meets with creatives to discuss the future of the series.
