Board of Control Cricket India (BCCI) secretary Jay Shah announced on Sunday that India has been awarded the “Guinness World Record” for the largest attendance at a T20 match ever. The milestone was set during the 2022 Indian Premier League (IPL) Final between eventual winners Gujarat Titans and Rajasthan Royals at Narendra Modi Stadium in Gujarat.

“A proud moment for all as India creates the Guinness World Record. This one is for all of our fans for your unmatched passion and unwavering support. Congratulations to @GCAMotera and @IPL,” read a tweet from BCCI.

Jay Shah also took to Twitter, writing: “Extremely delighted and proud to be awarded the Guinness World Record for the largest attendance at a T20 match when 101,566 people watched the epic @IPL final at the magnificent Narendra Modi Stadium by @GCAMotera on 29. May 2022. Thank you so much to our fans for making this possible!”

Indeed, it is a proud moment for the entire country to have been honored with the Guinness World Record for the highest attendance at a T20 cricket match. The Narendra Modi Stadium (also known as Motera) was renovated in 2021 and renamed in hopes of inviting “record” crowds to cricket matches at the venue.

Formerly known as the Gujarat Cricket Association (GCA) Stadium, the Motera Stadium has a capacity of 110,000, almost 10,000 more than the Melbourne Cricket Ground with an official capacity of 100,024.
