Hercule Poirot meets a creepy ghost in a trailer for Haunting in Venice

Kenneth Branagh’s Hercule Poirot is back in the first trailer for A Haunting in Venice. And this time he could be competing with an enemy of beyond the grave, rather than one that simply puts people in a grave.

That’s right, we’re talking about ghosts. Watch the trailer below.

As we see in the trailer, the story revolves around a young woman who dies in Venice a year before the events of the film. Michelle Yeoh’s character helps the girl’s mother hold a séance to speak to the girl, but someone is killed during the séance, and now Poirot has a potentially new type of case to solve: a supernatural one.

The trailer is selling this angle hard, featuring a trailer-long scene in which Poirot stands in front of the bathroom mirror and sees the dead girl behind him, her hair soaked. He quickly turns around, but there’s no one there.

The third Poirot film that Branagh has directed and starred in, A Haunting in Venice is based on the Agatha Christie novel Hallowe’en Party. However, this trailer doesn’t feel much like that story (which takes place in England), other than a dead boy is at the center of the plot and Poirot is present. The novel was not a ghost story, it was just another complicated murder mystery that required a mind like Poirot’s to solve. Hence the name change.

Is this situation really supernatural? Will Hercule Poirot have to outwit and fool the literal ghosts? Or is this all a smokescreen? You can find out when A Haunting in Venice hits theaters in September.
