Tucker Carlson would pose a credible threat to former President Donald Trump in the 2024 Republican presidential race if he ran, a former Republican strategist has said.
Carlson hasn’t hinted that he has presidential ambitions, but Rick Wilson, a former republican strategistsays Carlson, who until Monday was a top anchor on Fox News, has what it takes to put up a good fight against Trump for the Republican nomination.
“And if he runs? He is rich enough. You would immediately have an online fundraising giant second only to, and perhaps surpassing, Trump,” Wilson, who was a strategist for former President George HW Bush, he tweeted on tuesday. Wilson was a field manager on the 1988 Bush campaign, then worked for former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani as a campaign adviser in the early 2000s, according to Ticketpedia. Wilson is now a staunch critic of Trump and co-founder of the Lincoln Projectan anti-Trump super PAC.
Wilson added that if Carlson were to run, he would be the “only Republican to present a material danger to Donald Trump in a primary,” beating Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, who is currently Trump’s biggest rival in the Republican Party.
“Celebrity, money, quick-wittedness, cynicism, pro-Putin isolationism, and an overt love of authoritarianism are quite a strong secret ingredient to MAGA’s base,” Wilson wrote.
“The celebrity gave Trump the WH,” Wilson added. “I could certainly do the same for Tucker. And spare me your ‘That could never happen’. Even Trump’s Republican Party would never vote for a former TV host who promotes white replacement theory.” That is PRECISELY who they would vote for.”

Trump and Carlson text often and they’re the closest they’ve ever been, The New York Times reported this week. Privately, Carlson has previously criticized Trump, as shown by text messages made public in March as part of Dominion Voting Systems defamation lawsuit against Fox.
Carlson He has not said what his next steps will be. Freedman did not immediately respond to an Insider request for comment sent outside of normal business hours.
