The Federal Internal Revenue Service (FIRS) has stated that the agency leveraged information technology to generate N7.5 trillion for the government in recent years.
The Chief Executive of the Federal Internal Revenue Service (FIRS), Mr. Muhammad Nami, who was represented by a senior FIRS official, made this known at The Nigeria Computer Society (NCS), the umbrella body for all professionals of Information Technology (IT) at Nigerian Handover Ceremony over the weekend in Lagos.
Nami stated that the profession of the future is Information Technology.
“FIRS has harnessed technology to generate over N7.5 trillion for the government in recent years.
“The profession of the future is Information Technology,” he said.
Nami therefore encouraged other government agencies to take better advantage of the opportunities offered by technology.
Also speaking, Director General of the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA), Kashifu Inuwa Abdullahi, speaking via video conference, said that Information Technology has greatly contributed to the development of Nigeria as a nation, to through various implementations of government policies.
He said Nigeria could achieve economic prosperity and become a developed nation if the country can use technology to develop its citizens.
Abdullahi assured NCS of NITDA’s collaboration to further enhance economic growth and job creation for Nigerians.
In his keynote address, NCS President Prof. Adesina Simon Sodiya said that NITMA recognizes and celebrates excellence and commitment in the information technology (IT) profession.
Adesina noted that NCS’s advocacy efforts, which are geared towards achieving sustainable development in Nigeria, will not be complete without recognizing excellence and exceptional professionals who have made a significant impact on the industry.
For this reason, he affirmed that those awarded to the different categories of prizes have been carefully selected and voted unanimously because they deserve it.
“NCS, through the NITMA event, recognizes and celebrates excellence and commitment in the information technology (IT) profession.
“NCS’s advocacy efforts, which are geared towards achieving sustainable development in Nigeria, will not be complete without recognizing excellence and exceptional professionals who have made a significant impact on the industry.
“Those conferred with different categories of awards, have been carefully selected and voted unanimously because they deserve it,” he said.
Meanwhile, the society awarded professional scholarship awards to 41 of its outstanding members, including other categories of awards to deserving Nigerians.
Other award categories given to Nigerians, who have developed the tech space, include the Digital Governor of the Year award, which was hotly contested by four nominees: Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi of Enugu State, Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos State, Governor Nasir El Rufai of Kaduna State and Governor Nyesom Wike of Rivers State. Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu won the Governor’s Award.
