The Saturday qualifying effort before the Ambetter Health 400 this Sunday did not appear to be going to plan for Joe Gibbs Racing driver Christopher Bell. The 28-year-old driver of the #20 Toyota Camry TRD was seen spinning in the second session of qualifying yesterday, narrowly avoiding contact with the track walls.
The violent spin, however, brought some repairs and adjustments the team had to make to the Norman, Oklahoma native’s car during the session. This means Christopher Bell will start at the back of the field during Sunday’s 260-lap race at Atlanta Motor Speedway.
According to the NASCAR rule book, the 2023 season dictates that drivers must follow a set of qualifying procedures, one of which restricts teams from making adjustments and/or repairs to cars. Under special conditions, the Series General Manager is the only person who can grant authorization to teams to make any adjustments without incurring further penalties/setbacks.

North Wilkesboro Speedway has returned to the NASCAR schedule this season, with the historic track hosting this year’s All-Star races in all three of the sport’s national series. Hattori Racing Enterprises will welcome Bell behind the wheel of the #61 Toyota Tundra TRD Pro on Saturday as the 28-year-old looks to maximize his track time over the weekend. Bell was crowned the 2017 NASCAR Truck Series champion and should feel right at home behind the wheel of one of the junior class cars.
Hendrick Motorsport’s William Byron will also appear at the All-Star race on Saturday in May. Bell and Byron were teammates at Kyle Busch Motorsports in 2017 and will revisit their Truck Series careers this year.
