The Hall of Fame awards the award annually to the Canadian player who is deemed to have been outstanding in individual achievement and team contribution while adhering to baseball’s highest ideals.
Romano, a Markham, Ontario native, tallied 36 saves in 2022 and was named to the American League All-Star team.
Romano had a 2.11 ERA, the eighth-best mark ever for a Canadian reliever who has pitched at least 50 innings.
Romano surpassed all Canadian major league pitchers in 2022 with a 2.9 WAR. He also held his opponents to a .190 batting average.
“It’s really special to win this award,” Romano said. “I have followed the award over the years and have a lot of respect for previous winners. It will be great to have my name on the trophy next to your names. Thank you to everyone who voted for me.”
It marked the second year in a row that a Blue Jay had captured the award. First baseman Vladimir Guerrero Jr., a Montreal native, took home the award in 2021.
The award is named for Woodstock, Ontario native James (Tip) O’Neill, who was one of Major League Baseball’s first legitimate stars.
